A high level of crime has dreadful consequences in murder-suicide incidents. We felt it was necessary to provide a current analysis of how frequently these events occur in the US, who is impacted, and where they are taking place. This data is crucial for determining the most effective prevention and treatment approaches, according to lead creator Katherine M. Keyes, PhD, professor of epidemiology at Columbia Mailman School.
The National Violent Death Reporting System ( Restricted Access Database ) data was analyzed by researchers in 30 U.S. states, covering all data from 2016 to 2022. According to police reports and other sources of information, events were based on whether one or more murders were followed by criminal death within a 24-hour phase.
They identified 5, 743 fatalities that were related to murder-suicide incidents during this time, which is equivalent to 820 deaths per year, including 3, 125 murders and 2, 618 deaths. The majority of the offenders were pale men.
In Alaska and Arizona, murder-suicide levels were highest, and those in Massachusetts and New Hampshire were lowest.
