How does the human mind augment muddled music with visible speech cues to aid in the listener’s comprehension of what a speaker is saying in a quiet, crowded room?
Most people are conditioned to observe a speaker’s mouth movements and gestures to fill in any gaps in their ability to comprehend speech, but scientists are unsure of how that process actually operates.
” Your sensory cortex is at the back of your mind and your audio brain is on the historical lobes”, says , Edmund Lalor, an associate doctor of , medical engineering , and of , neuroscience , at the , University of Rochester.
” How that knowledge combines together in the brain is not very properly understood.
Researchers have been using noninvasive electroencephalography ( EEG ) brainwave measurements to study how people respond to basic sounds like beeps, clicks, and simple syllables to solve the issue.
Lalor and his team of researchers have  , made progress , by exploring how the specific shape of the articulators—such as the lips and the tongue against the teeth—help a listener determine whether somebody is saying” F” or” S”, or” P” or” D”, which in a noisy environment can sound similar.
Then Lalor wants to take the study a step further and discover the problem in more natural, constant, multisensory speech.
The National Institutes of Health ( NIH) is , providing him an estimated$ 2.3 million  , over the next five years to pursue that research. The initiative builds on a , past NIH R01 grant , and was actually started by grain money from the University ‘s , Del Monte Institute for Neuroscience.
Lalor’s team will examine the brainwaves of those who use cochlear implants and who have deaf or hard of hearing as blind or other types of hearing to study the phenomenon.
The researchers want to attract 250 cochlear implant users who will be required to wear EEG caps to record their mind responses while watching and listening to multisensory speech.
The great idea is that if someone gets cochlear implants at age one, their audio system will also function roughly the same as a hearing person, Lalor suggests.
” However, individuals who get implanted afterwards, state at age 12, have missed out on crucial periods of development for their audio system.
” As for, we hypothesize that they may apply sensory information they get from a speaker’s face different or more, in some sense, because they need to rely on it more strongly to fill in information.”
Lalor collaborates with co-principal analyst Professor Matthew Dye, who oversees the National Technical Institute for the Deaf Sensory, Perceptual, and Mental Ecology Center and the Rochester Institute of Technology’s graduate program in mental research. She also serves as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Rochester Medical Center.
According to Lalor, one of the biggest problems is that the EEG helmet, which measures the brain’s electrical action through the head, collects a mix of signals coming from a variety of sources.
Further complicating the process is the measurement of EEG signals in people wearing cochlear implants because the implant even generate electrical activity that more obscures EEG readings.
” It will require some heavy pulling on the executive aspect, but we have excellent students here at Rochester who can help us use transmission running, engineering analysis, and mathematical modeling to observe these data in a unique way that makes it possible for us to use,” says Lalor.
In the end, the team hopes that better understanding how the brain processes audiovisual information will enable deaf or hard of hearing people.
